The Merriam-Webster definition of the Iris is: “the opaque contractile diaphragm perforated by the pupil and forming the colored portion of the eye.” Throughout history, the eye has been referred to as the ‘window to the soul’.
If you refer to the Bible, in Luke 11:33, Jesus says “Your eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is sound, your whole body is full of light: but when it is not sound, your body is full of darkness.” Many practitioners will reference this verse when discussing the history of Iridology.
The study of the eye is not a new age idea. History books will show that Egyptians, cave dwellers and American Indians all used the study of the eye to discover what may be happening in the body. (O’Brian, 2015).
The Iris can provide clues to genetics, inflammation and degeneration. Iridology does not diagnose but instead analyzes or assesses predispositions and genetic inheritance. Some items that can be assessed through Iridology include:
- The potential presence of conditions that may promote chronic sinus and lung mucous, blood and cholesterol issues, lowered immune function, etc.
- If we have inherited genetic traits from our ancestors which may be able to be reinforced through a better lifestyle
- Patterns of personality to help us better as a whole human being (O’Brian, 2015)
The study of the Iris encompasses reading the patterns, markings, color and shape of the Iris to determine potential constitutional patterns. This is based on the premise that the patterns and markings in our eyes are primarily genetically inherited. The Joyful Living Service, in their article Introduction to Iridology indicates ‘The greatest single thing the analysis can do is point out one’s inherent weaknesses’. Once we have determined weaknesses, we can devise a plan to strengthen these items, with the hope of prolonging life and gaining better health.
Iridology cannot accurately assess the following:
- Bacterial Infections
- Fungal Infections (including candida)
- Kidney Stones
- Length of life
- Loss of organ via surgery
In order to provide a more complete picture of the status of the body, additional techniques may be incorporated such as nutritional counseling, Muscle Response Testing, etc.
Natural healers believe that true healing encompasses an integrated program which may include nutrition, herbs, emotional healing, essences, energy work, oils, etc. Iridology, then, is often paired with Chiropractic care, massage, reflexology, Reiki, blood tests, Muscle Response Test and other natural methods.
Iridology can be a great place to start natural healing as this is non-invasive and no expensive equipment is required.
Iridology counseling will be available in Mid-March, through Harmony Healing, LLC at the Mind Body Collective or private, in-home appointments.
